Exploring a wide range of crucial issues related to safety and well-being in the oil and gas industry.
Last month, JMJ’s Andy Ellis attended the 2023 University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Oil and Gas Safety, Health and Environment Conference in Houston. Several key points emerged regarding the oil and gas industry’s landscape in 2024. Here are some highlights:
Embracing “cleaner” operations has become an imperative for the industry. Escalating environmental concerns and renewed governmental commitments to energy and climate targets will intensify the pressure on traditional oil and gas companies to incorporate cleaner energy solutions into their strategies. In the year ahead, reducing emissions reductions and meeting capture/recovery requirements will become a major focal point.
Adopting advanced technologies for efficient extraction, processing, and distribution will be another significant focus. Adoption of AI, data analytics, and automation can optimize processes, reduce costs, and enhance safety measures. However, while technological advancements offer opportunities for safety improvements, integrating these technologies seamlessly into existing systems can present challenges. Ensuring that technology enhances safety rather than creating new risks will be a priority for many EH&S executives in the oil and gas industry.
Creating a culture of innovation and mindfulness requires a skilled workforce. Recognizing this, the industry is placing emphasis on training and educating its people. The goal is to equip them with the skills to successfully integrate new technologies and sustainable safety practices into their day-to-day operations.
Looking ahead to 2024, adaptability is key for traditional oil and gas companies. For EH&S executives, success lies in their ability to balance existing practices with a proactive shift toward sustainability, innovation, and a renewed focus on safety.
