How sharing experiences across industries can accelerate safety transformation

An innovative partnership heralded a new era of safety for a transport and development company.
Creating a safety culture is of critical importance on any major infrastructure project. In a high hazard environment where lives are at risk, it can’t be relegated to a tick-in-the-box item. Organizations that are committed to safety as a value can create a culture where people take responsibility for their own safety, and that of everybody on site. Leaders looking to shift their safety culture can learn a lot from the experiences of other industries. Danish transport and development company, MS/Letbane did just that.
The company had overall responsibility for the redevelopment of Copenhagen’s metro and light railway system, including construction of an underground loop, the City Circle Line (Cityringen). In its first six years, the project’s safety record had been poor. Recognizing they needed to do more, leadership formed an innovative alliance with energy company, Dansk Offshore. The vast experience, commitments and partnerships seen in the oil and gas industry served as a model for MS/Letbane’s own safety vision. JMJ was engaged to help bring clarity to that vision, address gaps in safety leadership and create alignment between stakeholders.
